Good so far.,
The actual drive inside this thing is a Samsung Spinpoint M7 (HM320II). Not a huge fan of Samsung drives, but it’s not bad according to the specs. I can achieve write speeds of around 20-21 MB/s on large files, while on a bunch of small files it sometimes drops to about 8Mb/s, which sounds about average. I like the matte finish, and surprisingly doesn’t get very hot even after leaving it connected overnight.
There is no installation required. Just plug it in, and it will show up under My Computer as a new hard drive. If you’re a Mac user I recommend that you format it first with Disk Utility, as it comes pre-formatted in NTFS. Oh, and don’t plug it in an unpowered USB hub, because it won’t work (or at least will perform badly, since it uses the USB port for power). Use one of your motherboard’s USB ports directly. Also, the cable is standard mini-USB so replacement will be cheap if you ever lose it.
I can’t say anything about longevity, but will update this review if it stops working after an unreasonable amount of time.
UPDATE (2/7/10): It’s still working fine as of today. I upgraded my motherboard to a more recent one (which I assume also comes with a newer USB controller), and I experienced a slight increase in performance with this drive. So I modified the numbers in the first paragraph to reflect this change.

Handy, Reliable, and Convenient,
The Verbatim Clon is a handy external hard drive with minimalistic design. I was a bit leery at first since I associate the Verbatim brand with CD-R’s and floppy disks. Inside the Verbaitim Clon is a Samsung HM32011 drive.
RELIABILITY
============
I’ve used this product for 2 months so far and found it to be reliable and convenient. There is a 3 year limited warranty according to the package. But the Verbatim website extends this warranty to a total of 7 years which is great. Up until now, the best hard drive warranty had been the 5 year one that I have with my Western Digital drive. According to several articles I’ve read, Samsung’s manufacturing is reasonably reliable. Adding the long warranty makes this even better.
SOFTWARE
========
No CD is included or needed. Just plug it in to your computer and you’re ready to go. Already loaded on the hard drive is Nero BackItUp 4 software for automated back up, system back up/restore, and encrypted back up option. Unfortunately, this software is PC only. If you have a Mac, you don’t get any software (but if you’re running OS X 10.5 or 10.6, i.e. Leopard or Snow Leopard, you already have automated Time Machine back up).
The package lists this drive as being compatible with Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Mac OS X 10.1 and higher. The Nero BackItUp 4 website does not list Mac OS X or Windows 7 compatibility. But you still would be able to use the hard drive for data storage without this software.
USB CONNECTION
==============
I like the single USB cable to connect to your computer. The older Freeagent portable external drives that I have had need to connect to 2 USB ports which is really inconvenient and cluttered when using a laptop. So I was happy with the single USB port connection of the Verbatim Clon.
(Note: If you’re connecting this drive to a USB hub, your USB hub will need to be powered, i.e. have a AC adapter plugged to it).
STYLING/DESIGN
==============
This drive has minimalistic styling. It’s not flashy like the latest Freeagent Go drives which has a nice LED pattern, metal finish, and rubberized bottom. Nope, this has a single blue LED and a plain black surface. The lack of a fancy design may be one reason why this external drive is 20% or so smaller than other external drives. This one can literally fit in your shirt pocket.
The plain black surface is scratch resistant and the drive has internal shock resistance to help protect your data. It really feels solid (as much as a non-solid state drive can feel) and there doesn’t feel like there’s any wasted space inside the housing.
CONCLUSION
==========
This is a good, affordable, no nonsense external hard drive with a great 7 year warranty, easy set-up, compact size, and convenient 1 USB port connection. My only issues are the really plain design, the lack of real Mac software, and the fact that the drive still spins when connected to your computer even when it is not reading or copying files.
USAGE IDEA
==========
The compact size of this external hard drive makes it easy to fit into a safety deposit box for protecting your most valuable files. The lack of software installation means that you could reasonably expect computers several years from now to be able to easily access the data that you’ve stored on it.
