Doesn’t actually fit 2011 MacBook Pros,
Purchased one of these to add an additional hard drive to a 2011 MacBook Pro; I have it working, but it took some hacking. The three main problems are that the hard drive slot does not securely hold the drive, the caddy is too large for the space in the computer, and there is no way to actually attach the caddy to the MBP body.
1.) The caddy relies on the connection to the SATA port to hold your hard drive in place; there are no screws holding it down (I used some Sugru to secure it).
2.) The caddy itself is too large to fit into the slot; if you dismantle it, however, there is a front plastic plate that can be removed. Removing this will make it too small, but it will go in.
3.) The caddy has no way to attach the existing DVD drive’s bracket (although it does fit under the wireless bracket, which will help stabilize it). I used a rolled up piece of high-quality paper to finish tensioning the drive in place.
The actual hardware data interfaces work fine; my extra drive works great. The caddy was just a pain to install and I would not recommend except for those inclined to hack their hardware!

EXCELLENT! Works for Aluminum Macbook,
Now hold on a second here…I am seeing a lot of reviews (not just on this particular model) that are negative, and I felt I had to weigh in on the discussion. I installed this in a 2009 Aluminum Macbook (NOT the Pro model) in under 10 minutes. It will also work on the Pro, and any other Apple laptop with the 9.5mm SuperDrive.
CONSTRUCTION/QUALITY
I honestly can’t find too much to complain about here. Sure next to the Optibay adapter (the one that started all of this) and Apple’s own hardware, this is no shining piece of hardware, but compared to most laptops (and believe me I have seen the inside of many-a-machine) this is your standard quality drive. The plastic isn’t flimsy, and the screws don’t strip. That said, let’s look at the design:
DESIGN
Ok, so here I do have a couple of issues, but nothing that will knock a star off. First people are complaining about there being no HDD retention system. Ok I will give you that one, your hard-drive relies on the SATA connection to hold it in place…this was overlooked in the design but is easily addressed. As so many people have mentioned, using the packing foam that came with the drive, cut into a long rectangle strip, will hold the drive in place enough to satisfy most standards. It takes a heck of a shock to hurt a hard-drive, and once installed it has nowhere to go. I baby my equipment, and wouldn’t use this if I was worried my $150 hard-drive was in jeopardy. Add some foam and problem solved. The second biggest complaint is that you have to remove a strip of plastic for this to fit properly…big deal. This is not “HACKING” your hardware…I wouldn’t even call it modding since I didn’t have to bring out my dremel or even a pair of pliers. All you have to do is pry it off with a flathead screwdriver, or even your hands if you are nimble like that. It snaps right off (without breaking) and takes all of 30 seconds. Don’t let this put you off…if you are opening up a macbook/pro this is the LEAST of your worries. Start worrying about tiny data cables and static electricity.
WHY 5 STARS??
- Quality is not half bad (+)
- Price is more than competitive for this hardware, it’s a downright steal. (++)
- Installation is not as hard as everyone makes out (+)
- Does not have HDD retention (-)
OVERALL
Overall I can whole-heartedly recommend this adapter. It’s easy to install, and fits inside perfectly once it’s in. There are no bulging cases as with some older versions, and so far nothing has gone wrong with it. Now if you will excuse me, I am off to transfer 940GB of data from my external hard-drive.
Feedback appreciated!
