love the drive but it does run hot when it was on top of another drive. Runs cooler when by itself.

perfect compact drive. light, tiny, fast, quiet, easy set up, backed up 180 gb of data on macbook pro in around 1.5 hrs using the usb2 connection, all whilst using avid media composer and another 2 tb external media drive ..... quite a bit going on simultaneously. comes with fw 400 & 800 options too. bus powered, great price, flawless integration with mac time machine. if you get this drive, definitely definitely buy the case logic 5.5 x 3.7 x 1.2 protective case for 10 bucks.... like it was built to hold this little beauty. i rarely write reviews but i thought this may help to ease the decision making pressure. overall an absolutely brilliant product.

In recent months, there were lots of offers for various Hitachi hard drives at very low prices.

I think, having purchased a total of six Hitachi hard drives, I know why: they are simply not reliable and Hitachi's policies re very suspect.

I purchased four of their 750 GB USB portable drives and two failed within minutes. It took them almost two months to replace one of them and the replacement was a "refurbished" unit.

I also purchased two Duo Pros. On one of them, the RAID selector switch broke off on first use. The unit had been purchased new in April, 2011. It has - supposedly - a one-year warranty. But as I've seen with the other two Hitachi failed drives I've returned so far this year, Hitachi times the warranty from the date of manufacture, not the date of sale or delivery to the user. So I wound up with an 8-month, not a 12-month, warranty.

Finally, on the Duo Pro models, the user cannot replace a drive if it fails. You're supposed to copy the contents of the good drive in a RAID 1 configuration and then send the entire unit to Hitachi for warranty replacement.

Also, I learned from a Hitachi tech rep this week that the 4TB units provide no indication that a drive has failed in the unit!

Pay a few dollars more in order to avoid Hitachi hard drives.

I ended up with 4 of these from various sources. I tested three with a known-good dvd burner. 3 of 4 got some kind of error in at least one application I tried using. I didn't bother to test the 4th one. Just sent them all back. Disappointing too, since I like 5.25" cases without fans. These seemed just the thing, but was disappointed at every turn.

I used this enclosure for a DVD-RW drive with Lightscribe. It's nice and quiet, and doesn't get too hot. It was easy enough to assemble. At the price I paid, I have no complaints. It's not exactly Apple-style design, but it looks OK.

This device is what I have been looking for in the past.
I have 500+ DVD discs which most of them are fitted into a Sony 400-Disc carousel DVD player. Although my Sony 400-disc carousel player can be stacked up to 1200 discs, but it is no longer a popular and widely available item; on top of that, it is pricey. (Sony DVPCX995V 400-Disc DVD Mega Changer/Player)
I love this unit where I can just bring it with me while traveling or simply move from room to room instead of bring the bulky carousel player or my DVD binder case to flip through DVDs. I have tons of home gym workout exercise videos I often misplace them and have to look around the house before working out. Now everything is consolidated into a portable drive and no longer to have ripped onto backup discs that scattered everywhere.

This unit also equipped with optical audio output which support kick ass for surround sound signal. At first, I used the RCA audio cable that comes with the box but sound was somewhat stat-icky (can't blame it, at this good price Monster Cable isn't included), but after I switched to optical audio hooked up to receiver and watching output to my 1080i screen, I am convinced that the quality is good enough to be integral part of home entertainment system.

Navigation is simple and elegant. Its navigation menu is semi-PS3 style. You can configure it to either list-view or icon view in folder navigation. It can certainly be improved upon on look and feel of folder navigation. But, it's intuitive and get the job done.

This device is not WiFi-enable, it says require dongle upgrade which is fine, but I wouldn't mind having that feature for a little extra cost.

A plus bonus for me is I also use this device to make my extra 21" LCD monitor as picture frame, so I wouldn't have to bother spend $100+ on big digital picture frame.

I bought and returned this item after it failed to perform as advertised.
It did not connect reliably to my ethernet network. It did not see movies over the network. It would lose the connection and have to be reset repeatedly.
The manual does not describe how to reset the box when it is in the wrong video mode. Several calls and emails to the manufacturer did produce a response after about a week, and they provided several magic keystrokes to reset the box. This should have been in the manual.
This is a great idea, and I would try it again if they fix it to work.

i recently bought the Altaz media player for me and my Soldiers here in Afghanistan to watch movies,share photos,etc. After recieving the media player, I first noticed how light it was, and how it was constructed. After hooking it up to a Tv set....there was no picture or nothing. I emailed the manufacture and he instructed me to do the following to get a picture using RCA cables:

Power the unit on.
Hit the right arrow on the remote 6 times.
Hit enter.
Hit enter again.
Hit the right arrow on the remote 3 times.
Hit enter.
After the reset commands he given me we were half way in business. We had a picture, but NO SOUND. I checked on different tv ranging from regular RCA cables to HDMI sets we use to brief meetings on, good picture. Still no sound. Emailed representative again but this time no response on sound issues. Dont waste your time and money on this product. poorly constructed using flimsy plastic. Me and troops were highly disappointed....returning this item for something better.

after reading rave reviews of this product, and so many varying reviews of other well regarded hard drives, i thought for sure i had found a great purchase.
The initial set up went quite well, but as i attempted to load bootcamp on my imac, having used the Minimax as a Time Machine backup site, the Minimax completely crashed. Two days old. That's when i found out
iomega charges customers for phone support. Tech guy i chatted with was knowledgeable, although managing multiple cases simultaneously i presume. We went through various fix-it routines, none of which helped. He then informed me that my warranty stipulated i would have to pay to return ship, and they would send me a refurb. I was floored. Two days old and babied, and they were gonna to charge me and downgrade. I protested and received a slightly better deal. They would send me out a unit (still a refurb) and i could mail them my unit back in the box, which i was under the impression would be their cost, since they sent me a link through UPS to print a return label. Unfortunately, the page to print the label was fraught with bugs, and i have chatted twice with iomega about the issue, and both times was told they would talk with their support group and get back with me. Their reply was two emails detailing our chat, one with the warning that i had two weeks to return the old drive or be charged the full price of the replacement. I wonder if my refurb will cost as much as a new unit? Will not support iomega again.
